They stand for Austrian tradition, representing the country far from home. The genuine Salzburg Mozartkugeln from Mirabell are exported to 50 countries throughout the world; the chocolate speciality carrying the name of the city’s most well known son can be found from Cape Horn to Iceland and from the Canary islands to Japan.
Throughout the world, whatever the event or occasion, Austrians bring the sweets from Salzburg as a gift. Mozartkugeln were passed around during the negotiations for Austria’s entry into the Common Market and Franz Viehböck, Austria’s first man in space, presented them to his Russian cosmonaut colleagues. Mozartkugeln, elegant in their distinctive red and gold packaging, have been carried to the four corners of the world as a typical souvenir and holiday gift by the numerous tourists that visit Austria each year.
The history of the Mozartkugel goes back to a period approximately 100 years after the death of the gifted composer. The Salzburg master pastry chef, Paul Fürst, started to produce spherical marzipan sweets, which he rolled in a hazel nut nougat cream, before setting each ball on a tiny wooden skewer. He then dipped each sweet into melted chocolate until it had a uniform coating. His customers in Salzburg were enthralled and soon everybody wanted Mozarkugeln. Even today the sweets are still made in exactly the same manner at the Fürst shop.
The long established firm of Mirabell also began production of their authentic Mozarkugeln manually, according to the tradition, but in order to keep pace with the ever increasing demand a manufacturing process based on the manual one had to be developed. The genuine Salzburg Mirabell Mozartkugeln in their distinctive red-gold octagonal packaging thus became a popular confectionary speciality. Today they represent a highly regarded souvenir and a synonym for Austria all over the world.
Mirabell also produces the delicious Mozart Thaler:- marzipan cream together with light and dark nougat cream surrounded by full milk chocolate; a guaranteed treat.
