Shopping in style

A shoppers guide to the city centre
Guide - Shopping.Eating.Art
(*.pdf - 2,8 MB)

We've all enjoyed the sights and thanks to our Salzburg Card our sightseeing programme has proved to be both informative and excellent value for money. We've admired this magnificent city, we've assiduously studided all there is to know about famous names, dates and works of art - and we've finally earned a long stroll round the shops.

It's not surprising that Salzburg is famed as one of the most tempting shopping centres in the world. We set out from the horse-pond on Herbert-von-Karajan-Square and go first of all to Getreidegasse. Attractively dresses windows beckon on both sides of the narrow street. I wonder how we'd look in these attractive Salzburg style outfits? But I think I'll keep th the numours high-class boutiques, well-stocked with all the latest international fashions. I'm tempted by matching shoes and a stylish handbag a couple of shops down. Did you notice those breath-taking earrings? I bet no-one's waring a pair like that back home.

Think I'll treat you to the very latest eau-de-toilette for the modern man. That's a present that I'll enjoy, too! And the wrough-iron shop-signs are beckoning once again. I've time to buy some of those delicious Salzburg Mozart chocolates for our friends. And I can't resist tasting one of these exquisite sweets now!

There are no cars to bother us as we stroll around the shops, as no cars are permitted in the pedestrian zone. Our car is quite safe in one of the nearby multi-storey car parks and good stores reimburse the parking charge. So now we decide to go ourown ways even if only for a little while. I want to cross the River Salzach to Linzer Gasse and take my time browsing round for clothes, underwear and shoes for work and play. But I should not mention that I'll also be looking for a top quality fountain-pen for your birthday. Or perhaps you'd prefer a sport watch. The amazing choice of goods in the shop windows makes deciding difficult.

You've decided to stroll down Judengasse and buy some exquisitely designed fabrics for our living-room, new shirts and ties and a few postcards. I'm feeling a little tired now and with bags containing my precious new purchases I stroll back across Mozartsteg over the Salzach and meet you again on Mozart Square by the Mozart monument. You w'ont believe it, but I've just started to miss you!

I am longing for a cup of coffee and one of those delicious pastries in one of the pleasant cafes in the old city. And you just can't resist the aroma of 'Salzburger Nockerl'. Now we've regained our strength, let's walk along the Cathedral. Have you photographed the magnificent Cathedral facade, the early baroque fountains and the Residenz yet?

The charm of the old city captivates us again and again. We've never shopped in such a delightful atmosphere. And I almost forgot to buy a present for my little niece; that blue Austrian-style wool jacket would suit her perfectly. On 'Alter Markt' we stop to admire the pastel-coloured facades of the patrician's residences, and the smallest house in the ciy.

There's a stand, sheltered by red and white umbrellas, where those wonderfully smelling 'Gewürzsträußchen' (typical nosegays and bouquets of dried flowers, decorated with nuts and spices) are for sale. Farm produce is sold daily at the market on University Square. And then you suddenly disappear, only to come back with a colourful bouquet of fresh flowers a few moments later. Am I the lucky lady?

Tired but happy, we stroll past the University and find ourselves back at our starting out point: the horse-pond. Shopping in this charming city is really a special experience and the lovely things we've bought here will bring back happy memories for a long time to come.
