Salzburg's markets

From local delicacies to typical souvenirs.
The so-called "Green Market" is held daily, except Sundays, in front of the magnificent backdrop of the Collegiate Church. A large number of market stalls on University Square and the adjacent Wiener Philharmoniker Gasse have everything to please the heart and palate and are a feast for the eyes.  The market not only offers fresh local fruits and vegetables but also exotic delicacies, meat, poultry, fish and seafood, bread and cheese as well as pastries.  Any feelings of hunger arising from viewing these tempting delights can be appeased at one of the many sausage booths.  Flowers, spice bouquets and Salzburg handicrafts round off the range of products.

Every Thursday morning Salzburg residents and guests meet at the market known as the "Schranne", a colorful market in front of St. Andrew's Church.  It is dominated by a characteristic hustle and bustle in any kind of weather; fresh produce, flowers and traditional handicrafts sell like hot cakes.  For refreshment the "Schranne" offers frankfurters, white sausages or Mexican sausages, fried chicken or native bakery specialties such as "Bauernkrapfen" (farm-style doughnuts), "Buchteln" (baked yeast dumplings), "gebackene Mäuse" (fritters) or Pofesen (slices of toast dipped in batter and then fried).  A smaller market is located directly behind the "Schranne" consisting of a number of wooden booths, serving as an alternative to the busy Schranne.

The large markets in Salzburg are supplemented by smaller Farmers' Markets selling specialties from the different regions of the Salzburg province.

Information on flea markets for casual browsing can be found in advertisements, flyers and posters.
