The beginnings of the International Mozarteum Foundation are found in 1841 with the formation of the "Cathedral Music Association and Mozarteum". Donations by members of the Mozart family provided the basis for the association's diversified collections.
Today, the International Mozarteum Foundation is one of the leading cultural organizations.

The purpose of the International Mozarteum Foundation is "to perform and propagate Mozart's music and music in general, to broaden the public's knowledge of Mozart and his creative work and to preserve the memory of Mozart, his work and his family".

To achieve these goals the Foundation pursues various activities:

- The International Mozarteum Foundation is responsible for the care and upkeep of two museums in the city of Salzburg, the Mozart Museum in Mozart's birthplace and a museum in Mozart's residence (Mozart-Wohnhaus). A small memorial in St. Gilgen am Wolfgangsee was erected in memory of Mozart's mother and his sister Nannerl.

- The International Mozarteum Foundation administers comprehensive collections. The original letters and music manuscripts bequeathed to the Foundation by Mozart's sons, Franz Xaver and Carl Thomas, as well as manuscripts obtained by donations and acquisition provide the basis for Mozart research and exhibitions.

The "Biblioteca Mozartiana" holds approximately 18,000 titles and collects any publications written about Mozart and his contemporaries, the archives manages documents on the Foundation's history, concert programs and iconography; an audiovisual museum opened in 1991 records and collects the various audiovisual interpretations of Mozart's music.

Since 1956 the International Mozarteum Foundation, as a collaborative effort between the Mozart cities of Augsburg, Salzburg and Vienna, has published the "New Mozart Edition", a centennial work of modern Mozart research intended to profit both science and practice. Mozart's entire oeuvre has been edited in approx. 130 volumes.

- One of the Foundation's major contributions to Salzburg's cultural life is the organization of concerts. During the annual Mozart Week (Mozartwoche) at the end of January around Mozart's birthday, the attempt is made to systematically perform all of his works.

The International Mozart Foundation's concerts also have a permanent place on the program of the Salzburg Festival During the festival season many series of concerts are performed.

In realizing its projects such as the reconstruction of Mozart's residence, the International Mozarteum Foundation is supported by Mozart communities and associations throughout the world.
