Leonhard von Keutschach

 Start
1495 - 1519
Coming from a Carinthian family of landed gentry, Leonhard von Keutschach was born around 1442 and called to the archiepiscopal throne during a period of turbulence between two ages.

He was elected on July 7, 1495 and consecrated one year later. When he ascended the throne the archbishopric was in a deplorable state. Through his clever administration and strict savings policies he succeeded in re-establishing the archbishopric's economy. Although his style of living was still closely bound to the fading Middle Ages, he tried to tighten the discipline of the clergy. In 1511 he had an "Agenda" printed by Jakob Pforzheim in Basel. It specified the procedure for the administration of the sacraments as well as the rituals for benediction and processions.

The same was true of the Missal, also printed in Basel in 1518. Attempts made by the residents of Salzburg to obtain the full rights of being subject to the Emperor alone were suppressed. In 1508 he granted the Chiemsee bishopric to the capable and theologically well-educated chamberlain, Berthold Pürstinger. The Cathedral Chapter, which had lived according to the rules originated by St. Augustine up to that time, demanded to be secularized into a canonical chapter. Leonhard von Keutschach succeeded in delaying this plan for many years, not to become effective until 1519. The Bishop of Gurk Cardinal Matthäus Lang, who had been appointed by the Pope as the archbishop's "coadjutor" at the urging of the Cathedral Chapter, succeeded Leonhard von Keutschach after his death on June 8, 1519. The great building projects executed by the archbishop include major parts of Fortress Hohensalzburg, including St. George's Church which still bears his coat of arms - a beetroot.
