Special exhibition - "Lucas Suppin" (1911 – 1998) Figural, surreal, abstract
Salzburg Museum will present a comprehensive show of Lucas Suppin's work from February 29 to June 22, 2008 to mark the 10th anniversary of the artist's death. Born in Salzburg's Untertauern region, Lucas Suppin received his art education at the School of Applied Arts followed by the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, although nearly 20 years in France had the strongest influence on his work. He associated with the most important artists from the "Ecole de Paris“ including Manessier, Hartung and Picasso. In addition to classic modern painting, his style was primarily influenced by the current trends in informal art.
Suppin returned to his home town in 1968 but let everyone know that he felt more like a Frenchman in exile. His relationship to the art scene in Salzburg was tense, particularly since he preferred slipping into the role of provocateur – similar to the writer Peter Handke, who was to become his friend. Although his style alternates between a variety of stimuli, his paintings are extremely unconventional and – also due to his attraction to baroque exuberance – distinctive.
Also new at Salzburg Museum: Starting February 8, 2008 Salzburg Museum will present Treasures from the Archeological and Medieval Collections in the "Small Hall" on the 2nd floor
