The color red
The color red is eye-catching, magical and wrought with symbolic meaning. In our culture and perception red is the color of life, of joy, of passion and of love but also the color of aggression and, by association, of the absolute demonstration of power.
Traditional European painting exploits the symbolic complexity of the color red, which even in the interpretation of the classical principles of color, sways back and forth between the reduction to a sensual stimulus and purely decorative function on the one hand, and complex iconographic associations on the other. The exhibition will contrast paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries from collections kept by the Salzburg Residence Gallery, Austrian museums and galleries with contemporary works.
The Residence Gallery presents historic paintings by François Boucher and Joachim Bueckelaer as well as works by contemporary artists such as Silvie Fleury, Wassily Kandinsky and Hermmann Nitsch.
