After a period of ten years, one of Salzburg Baroque Museum's greatest works of art is on display again – a terracotta model of the Adoration of the Shepherds, attributed to one of the most significant sculptors of the Roman Baroque period, Antonio Raggi (1624-1686).
It is a fine portrayal of the Adoration of the Shepherds in the art of sculpture.
The sculpture is dominated by the unusual depth of the relief, ranging from the shepherds, who are set on sort a of stage, to the vaguely accentuated background relief. The artist uses this concept to incorporate light and shadow beyond the usual measure, nearly transcending the limit posed by the clay material.
The presentation of the great terracotta relief by Raggi is accompanied by a documentation of his restoration, giving insight into the creation, material texture and composition and demonstrating the artist's virtuosity in detail.
Salzburg's Baroque Museum in the baroque Mirabell Palace and Gardens is a museum of European renown. Its unique focus – drafts from the 17th and 18th centuries – provide an understanding of baroque paintings.
