Paris Graf von Lodron

Start
1619 - 1653
Born in 1586 in the Welsch/Tyrolean Villa Lagarina (near Rovereto), Paris Graf von Lodron came to Salzburg on his uncle's instigation and became a distinguished cathedral provost. He was elected to become prince archbishop on November 13, 1619.
The difficult state of affairs of his time, particularly the consequences of the Thirty Years' War, demanded great political wisdom.
Although he managed to keep Salzburg clear of the hostilities, relying on the interventions of the Emperor and the Bavarian Elector, the defense of the city was becoming increasingly expensive.
He had the city fortified "like a tortoise shell" by the court architect, Santino Solari, which even resisted the army of the Swedish King, Gustav Adolf. He had the Cathedral consecrated during the turmoils of war (on September 25, 1628), making it the most elaborate festival that the city had ever seen. Paris Lodron had already succeeded in obtaining the official recognition of the Benedictine university he had founded a few years before (1625) from the Emperor and Pope. To improve the intellectual training of the priests, he founded several seminars, e.g. the Schneeherrn Canonical Chapter at Salzburg Cathedral in 1631 and the Collegiate Chapter in Tittmoning in 1633. He had two colleges erected across from the Franciscan Church providing accommodations for non-resident students: the Marianum School in 1645 and the Rupertinum College in 1653. In 1635 he granted asylum to a group of Swedish refugee nuns from Landshut. He had the Maria Loreto Convent built for them, which still holds a tiny image of the Christ Child called the "Salzburger Kindl".
The prince with the deep concern for the welfare of his country died on December 15, 1653 and was buried in Salzburg Cathedral.
