Mönchsberg ("Munk Hill") hike
A walk over the Mönchsberg is a wonderful experience any time of year. The man-made paths offer stunning views in all directions at every turn. New signs providing geological, biological, climatic, historic and cultural information are set up along the way.
Starting from the Augustinian Monastery and the Brewery, respectively the Church of Mülln, you first climb through the steplike Mülln and Augustinian fortification erected under Archbishop Paris Lodron. The defences, built between 1621 (Augustinian Gate) and 1638 (Monica Gate) by architect Santino Solari, protected the northern weak point of Salzburg.
The road takes the visitor to the first viewpoint below Mönchstein Castle with its idyllic Apollo Terrace. Here, the path continues along the eastern steep slopes of Mönchsberg.
The descent to Humboldt Terrace, halfway to the Museum of Modern Art, is certainly rewarding. Via the Museum of Modern Art, with its terrace offering a spectacular view, and via the Mönchsberg elevator pass through Bürgerwehr Gate below the fortification and then reach Bürgerwehr, which was constructed in 1487/88.

Then continue along the protection wall to the right to the viewpoint at Naturfreunde House (Stadtalm), via Neutor (= the "New Gate"), erected in 1767, and along the western steep slopes to the viewpoint in the direction of Rainberg, the oldest settlement of Salzburg (since prehistoric times).
At Kupelwieserschlössl castel follow the path to the right to Richter fortification - a stronghold existing since 1367 - and enjoy the view of the southern Salzburg Basin.
On the way back in the direction of the fortress there lies the entrance to the water reservoir Mönchsberg with the water exhibit. Continue to the fortress, then via Scharten Gate and Lodron Arch down to Stieglkeller, where all the hikers can quench their thirst and enjoy a wonderful view of the old town.
