"Salzburg Information" is the city's tourist office and responsible for international tourist marketing (sales promotion, information and production, the press and public relations). The office offers help and advice to tourists at three locations in the city.
Salzburg – Mozart's birthplace and home of the Festival
General information
The city of Salzburg is the capital of the province of Salzburg and has a population of 150,269. The city has approx. 4,000 cultural events and 6.9 million visitors each year. Next to the federal capital of Vienna, Salzburg is Austria's second most important destination for city tourism. In 2006 Salzburg celebrated Mozart's 250th birthday with a comprehensive series of events and countless highlights. In addition to large-scale events, Mozart fans were able to take advantage of a multitude of concerts and exhibits at numerous venues in the Old City.

2006 was an extraordinarily good year for overnight tourism in the capital city of Salzburg due to the Mozart Year, the EU Presidency during the first half of the year and the Cycling World Championship. The number of overnight accommodations crossed the 2 million mark in November. The sensational results in the city of Salzburg at the end of the year exceeded the expectations of tourist experts and those in charge. A total of 2,232,076 overnight accommodations was 18.4% more than the year before. The number of arrivals increased by 150,152 to a total of 1,197,291 (+14.3%).
These figures prove the increase in quality-tourism and the trend to explore cities and culture.
Average length of stay: 1.86 days (2005: 1.80 days) Utilization of commercial businesses, annual average: 55.9% (2005: 48.2%)
As expected, exceptional growth was noted from the Mozart-friendly markets, the USA (+23.1%), Japan (+30.8%) and Switzerland (+42.5%). Increases in overnight guests were also registered from the countries of Austria (+14.5%), Germany (+11.5%), Great Britain (30.9%), Spain (+37.9%) and France (+38.5%). In contrast, the number of guests from Italy declined by 1.5 %.

Whereas the number of visitors from Japan has increased steadily, a slight decline in visitors was noted from the other Asian countries, particularly from China.
Accommodations:
On August 31, 2006 the city of Salzburg had: 134 registered hotels with a total of 9,922 beds.
Divided by categories: 7 5-star hotels with 1,349 beds, 50 4-star hotels with 5,143 beds, 51 3-star hotels with 2,609 beds, 22 2-star hotels with 655 beds and 4 1 star hotels with 166 beds.
In addition, 5 youth hostels, 4 campsites and 65 private rooms or other accommodations were available in the city of Salzburg.

Visitors to the major attractions in 2006:
• Hohensalzburg Fortress incl. Fortress Museum: 935,166 (2005 – 805,636) • Fortress Museum: increase of 28% to 525,110 • Mozart's Birthplace and the Mozart Residence: 656,000 (2005 – 431,000) The International Mozarteum Foundation registered a 45% increase in visitors to the Mozart museums compared to the previous year. • Hellbrunn Palace, park and trick fountains: approx. 282,000 (2005 – 241,872) • Museum of Natural History: 272,076 (2005 – 261,087) • Salzburg Zoo: 266,975 – first increase since 2002 • Salzburg's Carolino Augusteum Museum/Main Building: (2005 – 25,387) The main building of the SMCA closed September 25, 2005 and will reopen June 1, 2007 in the New Residenz. Nearly 220,000 interested visitors saw the VIVA Mozart exhibition at the New Residenz. • Salzburg's Mönchsberg Museum of Modern Art: 68,452 (92,443) • Stiegl’s Brauwelt: 60,700 (2005 – 53,769). Currently closed for renovations. To reopen in September with a large alfresco dining area and private gastronomy. • Residenz Gallery, Salzburg: 57,704 (2005: 54,052) • Residenz – State Rooms: 55,389 (2005 – 52,227) • Panorama Museum: 31,607 • Toy Museum: 30,295 (2005 – 31,119) • Salzburg's Rupertinum Museum of Modern Art: 22,765 (27,013) • Folklore Museum in the Monatsschlössl: 22,744 (2005: 22,474) • Baroque Museum: 20,276 (2005: 20,625) • Cathedral Excavations Museum: increase of 30% to 5,666 visitors
Tourism as an economic factor:
€ 506,000,000 in total tourism sales in the city of Salzburg; (approx. 25% of the local GNP). It secures approx. 6,600 jobs in the city. Gastronomy:
About 500 restaurants Including: about 80 cafés, 60 bars and nightclubs and 60 beer parlors and wine bars. The city of Salzburg offers some 100 specialty restaurants, 38 fast-food restaurants, 11 gourmet restaurants and many other eateries.
City tours:
186 certified city guides (including inactive guides) as per February 2006 Tours of the city on foot - by bike – by horse-drawn carriage – by van. Plus guided tours on special topics from Architecture and Mozart to Zoo.
Salzburg Card:
This chip card not only provides free admission to all of the city's attractions and many points of interest in the vicinity but also serves as a ticket for public transport and can be used to take advantage of a number of discounts. All services booked on the "Salzburg Card" can be transferred to a "Swatch Access" wristwatch. Cards sold in 2006: 127,952 (2005: 90,668)
Internet:
The number of visitors to our http://www.salzburg.info/ sites continued to grow in 2006. An average of 186,891 people visited our English and German websites each month last year. Counting the other available languages, the average number of visitors totaled 240,929 per month.
A total of 2.5 million users visited the Tourismus Salzburg GmbH websites in English and German. Counting the other available languages, the average number of visitors was 3.85 million users.
The average user browsed for approx. 7 minutes. Each visitor read an average of 7 pages on Salzburg Information's home page.
Hotel reservations on the Internet: 5,801 accommodations were booked in 2006; this is an increase of some 38 % compared to 2005. This figure clearly underlines the international trend to book accommodations online at home.
Salzburg Congress:
Salzburg Congress had the highest level of turnover ever in 2006. The building in the heart of the city is a venue offering a variable room layout, state-of-the-art equipment and a comprehensive customer orientation. The international customer structure was just as many-faceted as the building last year: In January Salzburg Congress served as the political stage for the conference opening Austria's EU Presidency with over 300 high-ranking European politicians and in March the Foreign Minister Summit in Salzburg, attended by 25 foreign ministers from the EU plus the foreign ministers from Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Croatia, as well as hundreds of top officials and just as many journalists. In addition to a large number of international congresses, e.g. the "5th World Congress on the Aging Male“ with over 1,500 delegates, Salzburg Congress accommodated the heart of the successful Road Cycle World Championship in September – the press center for printed media and photographers – underlining its competence in hosting future large-scale events.
Salzburg Exhibition Center:
Salzburg Exhibition Center also had its most successful exhibition year in 2006: a total of 4,857 exhibitors presented their products at 31 trade fairs on a total area of 339,967 m2.
500,000 visitors are anticipated to visit a total of 34 fairs in 2007, including "Alles für den Gast“, the "euroLITE – International Trade Fair for Lightweight Construction“ and public events such as the "Classic Expo – International Vintage Car Fair“ and the "Amadeus Horse Indoors – International Show Jumping and Equestrian Fair".
