Salzburg celebrates Bach
The prestigious Bach Festival is being held in Salzburg for the very first time in its history, honoring the symbiosis between the city and the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. The 83rd Bach Festival is held in cities rendering special services to Bach. The Bach Festival will offer a total of 58 events in Salzburg and the neighboring towns featuring evening, nighttime, children's and open-air concerts, readings, excursions, workshops, vespers, and Bach symposiums. No admission will be charged for nearly half of the events, which will focus on young listeners. The event venues will include Salzburg's Festival Halls, the Benedictine University Auditorium and the churches in the Old City.
Albert Hartinger, the artistic director, has a large circle of virtuosos among the selected musicians including Benjamin Schmid, Camerata Salzburg, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, the Collegium Vocale Salzburg, the Salzburg Bach Choir conducted by Ivor Bolton and many others. The 2008 Bach Festival will close on October 20 with the program's highlight: Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the Arnold Schönberg Choir and the Concentus Musicus performing cantatas.
