Enchanting puppet theater
Salzburg Marionette Theater toured the USA with its "Sound of Music" production for over a month. And audiences were mesmerized: 15,000 attended the 30 performances at eleven theaters in the USA.
The play will have its Salzburg premiere on May 9, 2008.
A total of 55 marionettes, brought to life by 10 puppeteers, dance, sing and tell the story of the Trapp Family in Salzburg, fleeing from the Nazis to the USA to capture the hearts of the world with their songs. The idea of staging the musical with puppets may seem odd but the enchanting story of the Trapp Family is ideal for the make-believe world of the marionettes. Director, stage designer and costume designers for this production were enlisted in the USA.
The original musical was abridged to 90 minutes, leaving three-fourths of the music and omitting nearly 80 percent of the dialog. The character's psychology was emphasized to focus on their subtleties and the poetry of the play. The music was recorded by the Istropolis Philharmonic Orchestra in Bratislava under David Rosenmeyer's musical direction.
"The production is a delightful surprises from start to finish.“ (New York Times)
