Fürsterzbischof Markus Sittikus Graf von Hohenems

Start
1612 - 1619
The 38-year-old Markus Sittikus owed his election to the archbishop's throne to the strong intervention of the papal councillors. The reign he had taken over from his uncle, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, was afflicted with great difficulties. During the city's radical process of reorganization he was able to add only a single new accent: the Cathedral.
For this purpose he summoned Santino Solari, born in Como, Italy, from Seckau/Styria to Salzburg in 1613. Santino Solari was Salzburg's court architect until his death in 1646.
Salzburg Cathedral with its impressive 80 m west façade made of Unterberg marble has retained its majestic character since its creation in the Baroque era. The style of building twin towers with a central gable became a prototype of the Counter Reformation church architecture up to the time of the Jesuit settlements in South America. The second, purely Italian architecture (though containing alpine scenery!) is the pleasure palace and garden of Hellbrunn.
Archbishop Markus Sittikus had become familiar with this type of "villa suburbana" where the noble Roman society retreated during the hot summer months, in the years he had spent at the Roman court of his uncle, Cardinal Markus Sittikus von Hohenems. These villas usually had large parks, laid out asymmetrically in the manneristic style with artificial trick fountains to entertain the guests. In 1617 "Orfeo" by Monteverdi was the first opera to be performed on German soil in the so-called "Stone Theater".
To help the decisions of the Council of Trent to gain recognition, Markus Sittikus ordered the comprehensive inspection of his archbishopric in 1613. The extensive inspection which lasted until 1617 was the first of its kind. It not only uncovered countless inadequacies but also led to major liturgical innovations. The venture also resulted in the establishment of a register of births, deaths and marriages.
In 1618 Markus Sittikus von Hohenems had a Catholic school established in place of the old, dissolved Cathedral school in the garden of the former St. Peter's Convent, which was run by the Benedictines.

The ostentatious prince died quite suddenly on October 9, 1619 at the age of 45.
