The renowned Italian artist chose the Mönchsberg as the setting for his work. Commissioned by the SalzburgFoundation, he will set up an igloo, reflecting the relationship between art and nature, right next to the new museum.
The igloo will consist of 7-meter bent steel pipes accommodating 21 neon numbers – symbolically connecting the inconsistencies between living, professional life, emotion and rationality. Following Anselm Kiefer, Mario Merz is the second artist to be invited to set up an art project in Salzburg by the SalzburgFoundation. The artist is to be given a chance to translate his ideas into reality free from organizational restraints, creating a work of art in an area open to the general public.
