Austria's secret beer capital

Beer museum and brewing courses for connoisseurs, beer gardens under chestnut trees with beer steins and a cult bar with demonstration brewery.  Influenced by monasteries for centuries on end, Salzburg has plenty to offer in the way of beer tradition.

Perhaps because of the proximity to the beer-drinking Bavaria, monks and private brewers in Salzburg were able to establish a beer tradition that is unusual by Austrian standards. It is still preserved in the Augustine Monastery in Mülln, where Augustine monks have cultivated the brewing craft since 1621.

The March beer, bock beer or Lent beer brewed in Austria's oldest alehouse is kept in old wooden casks and served in traditional stone mugs. With an area of over 5,000 m2, the "Bräustübl“ is Austria's biggest beer hall with a huge beer garden under spreading chestnut trees at the foot of the Mönchsberg. Operations in the historic halls have carried on in the old tradition since 1912 and its "Standlgang“ of booths offering regional delicacies and refreshments has become a Salzburg institution.

Touch, smell, see and taste at Stiegl's Brauwelt, the largest beer museum in Europe, where the production of beer is an experience for all of the senses. Over 500 years old, Austria's largest private brewery converted the historic production rooms into an exciting exhibition hall. A Brez’n (pretzel) served fresh from the oven with a cold draught beer can be enjoyed in the beer parlor following the tour and are included in the price. Visitors (groups by prior reservation) can take an introductory brewing course at the demonstration brewery and try their hand at brewing the legendary "Bio-Paracelsus Naturtrüb“ or one of the other beer specialties. The Brauwelt has also established itself as a cultural venue, featuring customs and folk art as well as jazz and cabaret in the different cellars.

The "Stieglkeller" is another classic beer garden overlooking the Old City with a fantastic panoramic view. Among the many beer pubs on both sides of the Salzach, the "Fidele Affe" has a special status. First mentioned in documents in 1407, it is a clear favorite with the in-crowd, where outstanding beers from the Private Siegl Brewery in Obertrum, including the legendary Trumer Weisse, are served with hearty traditional fare.

A hotspot and leading venue for weissbeer (wheat beer) is "Die Weisse" in Rupertgasse: established 1901 and owned by the Gmachl family since 1987, it combines the traditional stone-pine rooms and outdoor dining area with a cult status alehouse, where one of Salzburg's most trendy bars regularly offers live-music in an ambiance of modern industrial architecture right next to the demonstration brewery.
