As a member of the European Union, Austria has been part of the Economic and Currency Union – which introduced the EURO as common currency - since 1.1. 1999. Since 1.1.2002 the Euro is circulating in cash form as well. One Euro is subdivided into 100 cents.
The following Euro-banknotes and coins are in circulation since January 2002: Banknotes with facevalues of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Euro Coins of 1 and 2 Euro denominations as well as 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents.
Changing shillings Shilling coins and bills (incl. all silver coins in ATS 25.00 to ATS 500.00 denominations) can be changed for euro bills/coins at the Austrian National Bank and its branch offices for an unlimited period of time, free of charge, at the exchange rate established by the Community. Commercial banks usually will not change shillings any more.

Changing foreign currency The Austrian National Bank does not exchange foreign currency! Foreign currency can be exchanged at any commercial bank.

Exchange offices at airports and major city rail terminals are open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm, in Vienna till 10pm, in resort areas a few hours each day seven days a week.
Money tellers (Bancomat): Apart from the banks, there are about 2.700 money tellers throughout Austia available 24 hours a day. Austria and foreign 'Maestro'-Cards (Bancomat-cards) are accepted for money withdrawal. National and international MasterCard-, American Express and Visa credit cards can also be used widely.
The credit cards most widely accepted in Austria are Master Card, Visa Card, American Express or Diners Club. Smaller shops, restaurants and pensions do however frequently not accept credit cards.
ATM Most shops accept payment by Maestro card. Cash can also be withdrawn at over 70 automatic teller machines throughout the city.
