Salzburg, one of the most important tourist cities in Austria and Europe, has a wide array of hotels to offer. Its outstanding international reputation as the home of the Festival and Mozart's birthplace has made the city increasingly popular to an international public. Visitors will find an excellent choice of hotels which can hold their own in a comparison with other international cities.
Salzburg has eight 5-star hotels with some 1,400 beds and over 42 4-star hotels with 4,200 beds, which comprise more than half of the available accommodations. The offer is rounded off by an excellent selection in the other hotel categories. The city of Salzburg has a total of some 10,000 hotel beds.
The tradition and quality of Salzburg's hotels are renowned throughout the world. The first hotels were built when tourism first started to develop at the end of the 19th century. Many traditional hotels offering comfort and quality, some with their own restaurants serving an exquisite cuisine, can be found in the historic city center near the most important attractions such as the Cathedral, archiepiscopal Residenz and the Festival Halls. A number of international hotel chains established themselves in the New City (St. Andrew's District on the right bank of the Salzach) during the eighties and nineties, enhancing the available accommodations with modern hotels.
Many of the Salzburg hotels are centrally located in and around the Old City or in close proximity to Mirabell Palace and the Congress Center. It is a great advantage to congress delegates to have accommodations within walking distance of meetings or events held at the Congress Center.
