Salzburg has a lot to offer in this respect: enjoy a hearty, medieval meal in a centuries old vaulted cellar, let yourself be pampered in a refined city restaurant with a view of the Salzach River or the Fortress, dine table to table with international celebrities in an elegant ambiance or dine overlooking the unforgettable cityscape from above.
Soup with liver dumplings, semolina dumplings or pancake strips, classical beef broth with noodles, a savory meat strudel soup or typical "Old Salzburg garlic soup," or new creations made with herbs or beer. The main courses in the Austrian/Salzburg style of cooking are world-famous and simply mouthwatering: From creamy veal goulash and calf's lights – Vienna style veal or pork escalope served with a variety of side dishes – pork roast with a crunchy crust served with dumplings and white cabbage salad – cooked beef with creamed spinach, chive sauce, bread sauce with horseradish and fried potatoes – roast or deep-fried chicken with delicious salads – pot roast or stuffed breast of veal – tasty lamb dishes – succulent roast goose traditionally served with red cabbage and dumplings – spicy liver or blood sausages with potatoes and steaming sauerkraut – choice game dishes with all kinds of accompaniments such as chestnuts, croquettes, apples or pears filled with cranberries – to fish such as trout, blue whitefish or char from indigenous rivers and lakes .
Not to forget the desserts! Tempting apple or quark strudel, fluffy quark dumplings, Vienna style sponge cake, browned omelet, Sacher chocolate cake or "Mohr im Hemd" – a nut soufflé served with chocolate sauce, are prepared to perfection. Those who still have room after sampling the above dishes might be tempted to taste the typical "Salzburger Nockerl." This sweet delicacy consists of three mounds of golden soufflé, sprinkled with plenty of confectioner's sugar and served on a silver platter; one order easily serves three!
The choice of beverages is also diversified: a glass of fresh beer from one of the local breweries, one of the oldest in Austria was founded in 1492, crystal-clear mineral water from the Gastein Valley or elegant red or white wines from Austrian vineyards. A glass of self-distilled rowanberry schnapps, a genuine regional specialty, should not be missed!
No wonder that Salzburg boasts a total of 26 award-winning restaurants. Fine gourmet dining can also be found in towns throughout the Salzburg province.
